So, what exactly is Quakecon?? How long has it been running?? And why is it considered the Mecca of gaming on this half of the globe?? You have questions and I have answers. Quakecon is based on the cult classic FPS (First person shooter) Quake, that made its debut on June 22nd 1996. Quake was developed by ID Software and published by GT Interactive. The fast paced tempo of the game gained the attention of many and spawned many other Quake games in the franchise. Quake was the succesor to Doom but unlike Doom, Quake offered full real time 3D rendering.

Now what is Quakecon? Well, you see, Quake gained such a cult following that it spawned its own convention. Originally, the thought of bringing people together to celebrate their love for Quake began in an IRC channel. Jin Elson and Yossarian Holmberg came up with the idea of assembling in a hotel and the rest is history. From its humble beginnings in a conference room at the Best Western in Garland, Texas to the massive Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas.

Now, why is it considered the Mecca of gaming on this side of the globe? Quakecon boasts the largest BYOC ( Bring Your Own Computer) on this side of the planet. This year was a record setting Quakecon BYOC with over 4,800 spots , nearly doubling the amount from 2017. Attendees pay a fee in order to bring their tricked out custom PCs into the BYOC for four days of Peace, Love and Rockets. The BYOC is open 24 hours during the length of the event which is incredible. Bored in your hotel room? Cant sleep? Head down to the BYOC and get some frags in!
