Once Animation rivals the two juggernauts will now join forces in this historic buyout. At&t has been looking for a buyer for Crunchyroll for several months now in an effort to reduce the companies debt. Funimation was funded in 1994 by former IT specialist Gen Fukunaga though he has departed the company as of last year. Funimation, at a total of 1.175 BILLION struck a deal and Crunchyroll will join the Animation giant, this could be a very good thing for Anime lovers like myself.
Funimation currently boasts 700 Anime series at $5.99 a month whereas Crunchyroll touts quite possibly the worlds largest collection at over 1,000 series at $7.99 a month. It is unclear whether the two services will be available under one payment plan in the future as VRV previously did with Crunchyroll included. When Sony purchashed Funimation in 2017 it led to its departure from join streaming services. It is safe to say that Sony will follow suit with Crunchyrolls purchase meaning that it will no longer be available in the multistream lineup that is VRV.
Anime has skyrocketed to the mainstream and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. We look forward to seeing how this merger unfolds in the near future. What do you guys think of this merger? Lets us know in the comments below!
