Quakecon 25 may have been physically cancelled but that didnt stop Bethesda and the team from hosting a virtual version of the beloved con. The orignally scheduled four days of Peace, Love and Rockets instead turned into a three day Twitch stream filled with amazing content . I always hear friends from other states and countries say the wish they could attend Quakecon and this year everyone world wide had the opportunity to do so from the comfort of their own homes.
The Quakecon fanbase is incredibly passionate and they showed their spirit in full force even from home. Templates were made available for people to print their own badges and even their own "BYOC" seat place holder signs. Bawls Guarana, a long time sponsor of the event, was prominent in everyones homes as well . The famous pizza box and Bawls can towers were seen from far and wide in the homes of attendees. Discord in my opinion greatly contributed to the success of the event. A tradional "Line con" took place in Discord where it took those participating to virtual locations of the events home , The Gaylord Texan. Every now and then new Discord channels would open leading you to a different section of the Gaylord until ultimately arriving at the BYOC for "Drop and go".
Bethesda had an awesome lineup of panels prepared for the weekend event. Special guests such as Robert Whittaker (Ex-UFC champion), Matt Heafy (Lead singer of Trivium), Marty Stratton (Executive Producer at ID), Hugo Martin ( Creative Director at ID), Pete Hines (Global Marketing for Bethesda) and many many more. Quakecon also gave Twitch streamers the opportunity to join the Quakecon at Home stream team and showcased a large number of streamers the entire weekend. Tasty Spleen held tournaments the entire weekend and the QNN Network provided the hard hitting news all weekend long as well.
For not having done this before I personally believe that the entire weekend went incredibly smooth. The content was good, new panels such as cooking demos were introduced and the vibe just felt right. Traditional shirtless games of Quake were played with [a2m] a long standing clan in the Quakecon community, Waifu for Laifu clan held it down, copious adult beverages were consumed and many Bawls were chugged. The love was truly felt the entire weekend even from home. Im going to have to say it was a massive success but please lets hope we dont have to do this again and we can all hang out in person again.
