Why I Like The Star Wars Prequels
While many people prefer him when he is Darth Vader, I like the turmoil that is going on with the man behind the mask. As a little boy, Anakin Skywalker is working with his mother, Shmi Skywalker, as a slave. When he is not working, he is building a droid called C3PO. Anakin’s father was never mentioned. I have a theory about that, but I will reveal that theory later. Anyway, you can see young Anakin struggle with being enslaved and not having many friends. It was not until a master Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn, and his apprentice Jedi in training, Obi-Wan Kenobi, visit his village on Tatooine that young Anakin’s life would begin to change. When Qui-Gon discovered Anakin had an incredible amount of Midichlorians in him, he decided it would be a great idea to train Anakin in the ways of the Force. In order for Anakin’s boss to agree to free him, Anakin must first win in a pod race. Anakin builds a pod and enters it into the next pod race. Through his intelligence and a little aid from the Force, young Anakin wins the race and is freed from slavery, but his mother is not. This frustrates Anakin and teaches him the first lesson to being a Jedi, no attachments. While Anakin is traveling with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, the trio meet Princess Padmé Amidala. Anakin begins to fall in love. After finishing business with Padmé, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Anakin travel elsewhere to continue Anakin’s training. Along the way, Qui-Gon meets and is challenged by Darth Maul to a lightsaber duel. Qui-Gon loses and dies, leaving Obi-Wan to train Anakin the ways of the Force.
In Star Wars: Attack of The Clones, Anakin Skywalker is now an adult Jedi in training. Although he is growing to be a great Jedi, Anakin struggles with one of the Jedi laws which says you must not have any emotional attachments. Obi-Wan sees Anakin’s love for Padmé as a distraction and suggests he stop seeing her. This frustrates Anakin as he wants to become a great Jedi, but he does not want to lose Padmé’s love. In this episode, Obi-Wan and Anakin meet the senator of Naboo, Sheev Palpatine, who later becomes the emperor of the galaxy. Palpatine convinces Anakin that it is okay for him to love Padmé. After a lot of thought, Anakin proposes to Padmé and she agrees to marry him. Against Obi-Wan’s orders, Anakin and Padmé secretly get married at the end of the second episode of Star Wars.
It was not until ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith’ that Anakin Skywalker is seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. In this episode, Anakin and Padmé are already married and Padmé is pregnant with twins. Of course, this just gives Anakin more reason to be attached as opposed to the Jedi law that states that a Jedi must not have any emotional attachments. Although he is soon to be a father, Anakin still loves Padmé more and would do anything to keep her alive even if it means losing the babies. At night, Anakin begins having nightmares with Padmé in them. In these nightmares, Padmé is having problems with her pregnancy as if she is giving birth. Although these nightmares involve Padmé, she is not the main focus of the nightmares. In these nightmares, Padmé’s struggle to stay alive during the pregnancy is just a reflection of Anakin's inner turmoil between the Dark Side and the Light Side. Emperor Palpatine senses Anakin's inner struggle and aids his struggle and convince him to join the Sith in the Galactic Empire. He tells Anakin about a very powerful Sith Lord called Darth Plagueis who even has the power to manipulate Midichlorians to create life. This is what makes me believe that Darth Plagueis is Anakin's true father. Of course, it could have also been Darth Plagueis’ apprentice, Darth Sidious, since Darth Plagueis taught Darth Sidious everything he knew. Along with the ability to manipulate Midichlorians, Darth Plagueis also had the power to sustain life and keep someone from dying. Of course, Darth Plagueis taught this power to his apprentice, Darth Sidious, as well. Anyway, Emperor Palpatine explains this power that Darth Plagueis had before he was betrayed and killed in his sleep by his apprentice. Anakin asks Emperor Palpatine if it is possible to learn this power. Emperor Palpatine looked at him and said “not from a Jedi.” The way Palpatine responded should have hinted at Anakin that Palpatine is a Sith Lord, but it did not. In fact, it is a bit of a surprise that Anakin did not figure it out sooner when Palpatine ordered Anakin to behead Count Dooku. It was not until a little while later that Anakin learned that Palpatine is really Darth Sidious. Soon after, Palpatine is attacked by Mace Windu, a member of the Council. Mace tries to kill Palpatine while Anakin tries to explain that Palpatine must first appear in front of the Council as a prisoner. Mace disagrees and says that Palpatine is too dangerous to be kept alive. Palpatine begins hitting Mace with lightning coming out of his fingers while his face wrinkles up, revealing himself as Darth Sidious. Darth Sidious stops shooting lightning out of his fingers to catch his breath, while Mace decides that is a good time to kill him. Out of anger and frustration, Anakin pulls out his lightsaber and cuts off Mace’s hand that was holding the lightsaber. Palpatine, now fully transformed into Darth Sidious, finishes Mace off by once again shooting lightning out of his fingers. After killing Mace Windu, Anakin’s guilt of aiding in the murder of a Jedi Master quickly turns into submission as his eyes change, revealing that he has joined the Dark Side of the Force. Darth Sidious then gives him the name, Darth Vader. Darth Vader is sent to kill any remaining Jedi, as they may pose a threat to the Galactic Empire. After killing most, if not all, the Jedi, he meets with Padmé on Mustafar, a volcano-like planet. Padmé tells him she does not like what he is becoming. Anakin blames Obi-Wan Kenobi, who arrives to confront Anakin, for her “betrayal.” The two end up in a lightsaber duel. Anakin loses when he tries jumping over Obi-Wan only to have one of his arms and both his legs cut off while he is in mid-air. After Obi-Wan leaves, Darth Sidious comes to Darth Vader’s aid. During all of this, Padmé is losing her will to live, but first gives birth to twins, Luke and Leia. Now back to Darth Vader. Darth Sidious has new artificial limbs along with a new suit and mask to help him stay alive. When the new and improved Darth Vader is complete, Darth Vader asks if Padmé is alright. Darth Sidious tells him that in his anger, he killed her. I believe it was at this point that Darth Vader loses almost what is left of the Light in him. Darth Sidious grins when Darth Vader finds out Padmé is dead, revealing that Darth Sidious knew that the loss of a loved one would draw him even further from the Light.
